Asheville Citizen-Times Smears Local Schools, Again

Whats Black and White and Yellow all over? The Asheville Citizen-Times

Once again, the Asheville Citizen-Times has taken to smearing local schools to sell newspapers.

Once again, they have reported on a heinous crime in Asheville, only to add information about where the suspect previously went to school, adding an element of association for the schools and the suspects.

I know they've gone through some changes recently but this shoddy reporting, where heinous crimes are linked by proxy to local high schools is wrong on numerous levels. Have some self-respect for crying out loud.

------------------------------

I would encourage any local family who owned a business who advertised in the Asheville Citizen-Times to reconsider the placement of their advertisement dollars.

Suggestions for Hidden Fun in Asheville

Help a writer out? Pam Hecht has asked for help from BlogAvl for a story she's writing and I'd love to see. What are the little-known places to visit in Avl this fall?

First suggestion: Christopher Mello's amazing Gnomon garden in West Asheville (Flickr photos from The Zen)

Here's what Pam has to say:

Greetings, wondrous, prolific bloggers out there. I'm a freelance writer (and lazy blogger!) with a question for an assignment I'm working on for the ACT. It's about the top things to do in Asheville in the fall (Oct. /Nov.) and I'm on the hunt for places, events, etc. in Asheville/WNC that that are off-the-beaten-track or new - things that even local folks may not know about. Any suggestions? My deadline is Tuesday, 9/29. (I've come up with a few, but gee, it looks like I have not been getting out enough since moving here two glorious years ago. I vow to check out every place you recommend...within reason!)

Thanks so much for reading this! Pam J. Hecht, pamjh8 at gmail daht cahm, www.planetpamj.com

Swift Night Out This Friday

Seventh Annual Swift Night Out: An Event for the Birds

Gather on the O. Henry side of the Grove Arcade

Friday, Sept. 25 (rain date Saturday Sept. 26)

7-8 p.m.

Looks like a good year for watching the swifts -- as of yesterday, the big colony in the Grove Arcade chimney is thousands strong. Cross your fingers for a dry evening!

From a press release:

Chimney Swifts Swarm Downtown,

Swift Night Out Invites Asheville to Watch

Asheville, NC (Sept. 21, 2009) An all-ages nature and community event, Swift Night Out on Friday, Sept. 25 marks the peak of downtown’s evening avian aerial show as thousands of birds swarm the sky above the Grove Arcade -- and all of Asheville is invited to watch.

A swirling mass of up to 5000 birds flies in sweeping circles…it’s not Animal Planet or National Geographic, it’s downtown Asheville, where chimney swifts flock every year by the thousands before their long migration south to Peru.

Every year swifts gather in chimneys all over Asheville, and the Grove Arcade is commonly home one of the largest colonies in town. Forming huge, moving patterns in the sky every evening at dusk, the swifts circle their home chimney as a group thousands strong before flying in for the night.

Swifts are a protected species. Their habitat (hollow trees and chimneys), which is not protected, is declining, so the swifts are too. A decline in swifts means an increase in summertime pest insects, as swifts eat mosquitoes and gnats.

Swift Night Out 2009 is sponsored by Asheville PARC, the Elisha Mitchell Audubon Society and Natural Selections gift store on Battery Park Avenue.

Watch a video of local swifts here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2TfM035OXds

Hard-Hitting Movies This Week in Avl

Tonight at the newly renovated Carolina Cinemas on Hendersonville Road is the global premiere of The Age of Stupid, an activist drama-documentary-animation hybrid that premiered in the U.K. already, but shows all over the world, one night only, tonight.

The Asheville showing is one of only four in N.C.

Director Franny Armstrong also directed McLibel, and Academy-Award nominated actor Pete Postlethwaite stars as the last person alive in 2055, watching archived footage from our time and asking why we didn't we stop climate change when we had the chance.

Superstar actress and Ashevillean Andie MacDowell presents The Greatest Silence: Rape in the Congo on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Fine Arts. MacDowell makes introductory and post-screening comments on all dates.

This Emmy-nominated documentary explores the mass rapes of women and girls by soldiers using sexual violence to dominate income from the mining of Congolese conflict ore. This ore is sold to make electronics like cell phones and laptops.

The film shows at The Fine Arts Theatre on
Thursday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m.
Friday, Sept. 25 at 1 p.m.
Saturday, Sept. 26 at 1 p.m.

A reception sponsored by Our Voice for ticket holders is next door at Blue Spiral after the September 24 showing.

Speakers include John Prendergast, co-founder of the Enough Project and Mayor Terry Bellamy, both on September 24th. Barb Anderson, Executive Director of Our Voice Asheville, speaks on all dates.

Proceeds benefit Our Voice, Inc., a local organization offering assistance to area victims of rape.

[I've seen this movie and I think of it as required viewing for the human race. Consumers need to be educated about conflict products and the horrors going on in the Congo need to be stopped at their economic source. While this movie contains only one disturbing image, the women's stories alone are utterly and completely horrifying. You have been warned. See it anyway.]

FREE SHOW Tonight @ the Rocket Club!

Musically uninhibited

“I always tell people it’s Gypsy Folk-Rock but I don’t know if I would say that about the current material. I’m open to experiment with different genres but it all seems rooted in folk music to me,” replied Dustin Hamman when asked about how he would classify his music. Hamman, from Portland, OR, plays under the name Run On Sentence, which was originally inspired by a character in a “sort of musical” he was working on years ago. Though he often plays solo, the collective band name represents Hamman’s songs in whatever form they are presented, with an open-ended array of musicians performing with him at any given time, “I feel like it’s easy for a band to get locked into a sound then lose their drive to experiment because of trying to hold true to some self imposed identity… I wanted something to remind myself to keep moving.”

When he writes music, Hamman often heart the sounds in his head before picking an instrument, and the versatility of a constantly evolving group allows for further experimentation within instruments and band members, as many of the musicians he plays with are also in other bands, much like Seth Kauffman of Floating Action, who Hamman will be sharing the stage with at Rocket Club on Thursday.

Though he currently lives in Portland, Hamman has spent time in Asheville, and says “there are just some places where I feel more comfortable than others… there is something about both cities that makes me feel relaxed, like I can just be who I am and do what I want and it’s no big deal… it’s important to feel uninhibited. As for specifically why, it’s not something i’ve really thought about or tried to quantify, I just dig the towns I guess.”

As the digital music movement makes artists like Hamman more accessible to people who may not ordinarily be aware of his music, independent musicians have made adjustments to how they market themselves to gain a wider audience. He currently lets people stream his music online for free, but he does charge for downloads. “I like the idea of making it free and asking for donations but I haven’t fully gone that route yet. I work with people’s budgets at live shows, but at live shows people seem to want to support what I’m doing because they’ve had a first hand experience… online, a person doesn’t have to see me first hand and know that I really need their support in order to keep doing this. Ultimately I’d rather have people hear the music than not, but it’s the people who pay for it who allow me to keep making it.”

Sponsored by Blue Barnhouse Letterpress and the Rocket Club, the show will feature full sets by both Floating Action and Run On Sentence, and is completely free. Remember to pick up your commemorative coaster, designed by Kyle Durrie of Power and Light Press in Portland (Ex- BBH staff, she also designed the letterpressed Run On Sentence album) pressed at Blue Barnhouse.

Run On Sentence and Asheville’s Floating Action play a free show at The Rocket Club (401 Haywood Rd., West Asheville, 505-2494) on Thursday, Sept. 17.

Asheville City Council Candidate Forum Tonight

Pottery, chimney swifts and now civic duty...

City council elections start soon. Have you thought about your vote?

Mountain Voices Alliance (MVA) and Asheville PARC co-host an Asheville City Council candidate’s forum today from 7-9 p.m. at the Randolph Learning Center, 90 Montford Ave. in Asheville.

Doors open at 6:30.

Those who have responded and will appear include Cecil Bothwell, Gordon Smith, Carl Mumpower, Kelly Miller, Esther Manheimer, J.Neil Jackson and Cesar Romero.

I’ve heard people say, “It doesn’t matter if you don’t know anything about the candidates or the issues. You still need to get out to the polls.” I disagree. If you don’t know why you’re choosing a specific person or position, all you’re doing is showing up and making a random mark. That’s not voting.

Swift Night Out is Friday, Sept. 25

Seventh Annual Swift Night Out: An Event for the Birds
Friday, Sept. 25 (rain date Saturday Sept. 26)
7-8 p.m.
The Grove Arcade, downtown Asheville

An all-ages nature and community event, Swift Night Out marks the peak of Asheville’s avian aerial show as chimney swifts swarm the sky above the Grove Arcade.

A swirling mass of thousands of birds flies in sweeping circles in the sky…it’s not Animal Planet or National Geographic, it’s downtown Asheville -- where chimney swifts flock in groups of up to 5,000 before their long migration south to Peru.

Every year swifts gather in chimneys all over Asheville before their journey, and the Grove Arcade is commonly home one of the largest colonies.

“Swift scouts” are needed to check on the birds through September – just a quick peep around 7 or 8 p.m. to be sure hawks haven’t chased them to another downtown chimney. Organizers have generous help from local birders, but we welcome more to regularly check on the Grove Arcade swifts and other colonies around town.

Swift Night Out 2009 is sponsored by Asheville PARC and the Elisha Mitchell Audubon Society

Sawbones vs. Jawbones 2009

Local Doctors & Lawyers Set to Face Off On the Court

Doctors and lawyers are preparing for a rumble right here in WNC. This face off isn't what you might expect, however. Instead of being courtroom opponents, these MDs and JDs are athletic adversaries in the upcoming 2009 Sawbones vs. Jawbones basketball game.

Though there is some pre-game banter between the teams, the September 13th match-up is truly a light-hearted, family-friendly fundraiser for the Buncombe County Medical Society Foundation. "UNCA is providing some coaching so that things flow smoothly, but the feel is more like a pick-up game than stiff competition," said Alex Diez who heads the event-planning committee. There will be pre-game festivities for the kids to enjoy starting at 1:30pm. Highlights include clowns who will provide face painting and balloon animals, and basketball clinics with players from the UNCA men's and women's basketball teams. T-shirts will be available to get your favorite players' autographs. The other fanfare to count on includes full concessions, a silent and live auction, and a free-throw contest at half-time.

Sawbones vs. Jawbones 2009 is being held at the UNCA Justice Center, Sunday, September 13 at 3:00 p.m. with pre-game festivities starting at 1:30. Tickets are $5 at the door and all kids four and under are admitted for free. All proceeds from ticket sales and the silent/live auction will be used to benefit programs of the Buncombe County Medical Society Foundation. A donation will be presented at half-time to Pisgah Legal Services in appreciation for the Jawbones team participation in the game.

Open House and Launch Party

Asheville FM hosts an Open House from 2 – 7 PM at 373 Haywood Rd behind the West Asheville Izzy’s. The party continues at 9 PM at the Grey Eagle with musical guests Floating Action, Ahleuchatistas, & Spaceheaters.

Open House/ Launch Party Flyer

Tickets for Grey Eagle event available at thegreyeagle.com and Harvest Records $6 advance $8 @ door.

Twestival This Sunday

Last year's Asheville Twestival -- an event for Twitter users supporting an amazing charity, charity:water, was organized by a handful of locals in nine days. Offering a silent auction, great live music and beer, it was a runaway success, raising $6000 that, combined with funds raised from all over the world, was later used to drill wells in the developing world.

This year Asheville Twestival goes local, benefiting the Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project, a WNC nonprofit with this vision:

A future food system throughout the mountains of North Carolina and the Southern Appalachians that provides a safe and nutritious food supply for all segments of society; that is produced, marketed and distributed in a manner that enhances human and environmental health; and that adds economic and social value to rural and urban communities.

Local food for local people. I like.

This year's event offers music, games, a cake walk and a raffle. Stay tuned to BlogAsheville for more details.

Asheville Twestival is this Sunday at Asheville Pizza at 77 Coxe, 2-8 p.m. Tix are $10. You can get them here.
