Attached is a poster for an upcoming FREE concert at UNCA featuring local funk n' rollers Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band (www.bootyband.com ) and up-and-coming Latin rocker Santino (www.santinomusic.com). The event is a benefit for Amani Children's Foundation, which raises funds and awareness for children orphaned by AIDS in Africa.

This show -- which is open to the public and, did I mention, FREE -- is going to be the place to be on the 14th, as Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band is promoting its new CD, "Now You Know," which was unveiled at a release party at The Orange Peel a couple of weeks ago. And Santino is touring in support of his upcoming debut CD, "Indiocumentado," although his songs have already appeared in the movies "War of the Worlds" and "Employee of the Month" and on the TV shows "The Shield" and "Kidnapped." So please pass the word along to anyone and everyone.

Second Annual General Strike and Gutter Guzzler

You've waited so long to stick your fingers into those well-used holes and curl that orb across oily slats. You don't have to wait much longer.

BlogAsheville hosts the 2nd Annual General Strike and Gutter Guzzler this Saturday, March 31st at Sky Lanes on Patton Ave/Smoky Park Hgwy in west Asheville. We'll gather at 7:30 and get to bowling by 8. Last year's champion, syntax, isn't resting on his laurel. He told a BlogAsheville reporter, "I'm'o destroy them blogger geeks ag'in."

All Asheville area bloggers and their people are welcome. Please let me know in the comments whether you're coming, so I can reserve some lanes. Wear your best bowling duds, and bring your drinking hats.

Mum's the Word....

The Citizen-Times reports "City Councilman Carl Mumpower in an email to City Manager Gary Jackson shared some of his observations of drug activity during the Bob Weir and Ratdog show Friday night at the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium.

Mumpower was granted free access to the concert for observation purposes."

I went to the civic center this evening and spent about 15 minutes inside with the intention of observing the reported drug activity that occurs at some concert events. I wanted to share my brief observations-

1) Thomas Wolfe auditorium smelled like an Amsterdam hash bar.

2) In the bathroom I observed a gentleman purchase pills and ingest same from another gentleman with a T-Shirt that said something like "I play for mushrooms."

3) I observed one person in the back balcony smoking a joint and a group of people sharing a joint on the left side of the auditorium.

4) The music "Ratdog" was good.

5) When I arrived at the civic center there were 6-8 officers standing in the front of the building. Most were in uniform.
I would appreciate the opportunity to sit down with to discuss drug enforcement policies for Civic Center events."

The Citizen-Times is reporting "Robert Bly, one of America's most influential poets, will discuss "The Soul is Here for Its Own Joy: An Evening of Sacred Poetry," at 7:30 p.m. April 25, at UNC Asheville's Humanities Lecture Hall. Bly will read from his own work and will talk about the poetry of Rumi, Hafez and Mirabai.

In his wide-ranging role as groundbreaking poet, poetry translator, storyteller, editor and father of what he calls "the expressive men's movement," Bly remains one of the hotly debated artists of the past half-century. His bestselling book, “Iron John,” sparked the popular men’s movement and defined a whole generation’s view on masculinity. Bly is the author of more than 30 books of poetry, including the 1968 collection “The Light Around the Body,” which won the National Book Award. As editor of The Fifties, The Sixties and The Seventies magazines, Bly introduced many unknown European and South American poets to an American audience. He is editor of many poetry collections and author of numerous of nonfiction books. Bly’s honors include Guggenheim, Rockefeller and National Endowment for the Arts fellowships.

Brush Fire Spreads to 100 Acres

Asheville Citizen Times:

REEMS CREEK — A brush fire in Buncombe County on Friday spread to more than 100 acres by the time firefighters had it surrounded with fire lines, the North Carolina Forest Service said.

The fire that started about 2 p.m. was burning in an area between Phoenix Cove Road and Pink Fox Cove Road in the Reems Creek area, said John Chiles of the forest service.

Several structures had been threatened but no damage was reported, he said. The cause of the fire was still being investigated.

Fire crews planned to watch the fire through the night to prevent it from spreading.

Well, it raged all day yesterday just across the road from our place. We watched this helicopter make about a hundred trips between the fish pond down the road where it filled its massive ball with water and the fire.

By late last night there were two rings of fire visible from our front window. It's still smoking pretty heavily today but the copter hasn't come back and I don't hear much activity.

You remember what happened. You remember how syntax owned the lanes last year. About twenty folks turned up on that frigid February night in 2006 for a night of beer-soaked bowling at Patton Avenue's Sky Lanes before retiring to Felicity's place for homier shenanigans.

Well it's time again to spit-shine that orb of earthly delights for a night out with the luminous bloggerati of Asheville.

Please let me know in the comments if you're coming, and spread the word to all those lesser-heard-from bloggers we all want to see more of. I'll reserve the lanes, but I need to know how many to reserve.

Citizen-Times: A Newspaper of Clear Priorities

(NOT). Check out today's front page and local news section on their website. The big news? Folks are peeved that the liquid dino-poop for their cars has gone up a dime or two. WAAH. The third little news item? A violent racially motivated hate crime in Canton. As a lead, I'd think this would get a lot more coverage and would be useful in getting the community talk about the currents of racism which still course through the mountains. Even the headline doesn't refer to the racist motivations cited in the article "Pub burned with owner tied up inside." At least WLOS leads with it. Sheesh.

A Random Brahma Bull

On Patton Avenue today, there was a young girl with a brahma bull, waving to traffic right there in front of Alan's Pawn Shop by the corner of Leicester Highway. Why was this? Who knows? But random brahma bulls on Patton Avenue are a Good Thing.
