Last Vortex Cabaret of the Month this Thursday, January 28th

The Vortex Cabaret is a live variety show put on for the benefit of the many excellent and innovative performers in the Asheville area. It happens every Thursday night from 9 PM to 1 AM at 11 Grove St, above Scandals. We have comedy, drama, music, burlesque, and straight-up surrealism, plus a whole lot more.
This week, we feature an exhibition by local artist Allysa Oliver. There's also stand-up comedians from the Tomato Tuesdays group, dramatic readings from Trevor of Firestorm Cafe, and the best in Asheville's underground music scene.
Admission to the Vortex Cabaret is $5, and ages 18+. We charge a cover because we believe in paying artists. For more information on the Vortex Cabaret, and to subscribe to updates, please visit our website at vortexcabaret.blogspot.com.

Louis C.K. at the Orange Peel!

Sure, he's the director of Pootie Tang and his H.B.O. series Lucky Louie only lasted one season, but Louis C.K. is still possibly the funniest and bravest stand-up coming working in America today. With material ranging from fatherhood to the eventual decline of the fortysomething's body, C.K. approaches his material with a fearless and unflinching honesty. "As long as it's honest, or as long as I mean it, I say it. I really don't see a point in having a line in your life. it's a bizarre idea to me to have a limit in speech. That's the whole premise of my stand-up is to be honest. I really don't see the point in saying 'I'd better not say that', says the comedian.

Right now, you are probably asking 'what does this have to do with BlogAsheville'? The answer is this, Lousi C.K. is playing The Orange Peel tonight at 8 p.m. (the doors open at 7:00).

For those of you not lucky enough to grab tickets, fear not! Today on the Bugg Blog, I have placed a full interview with Louis. You can read it by clicking here.

Laugh Your Asheville Off: Day Two

Asheville's first-ever (?) comedy festival continues today at the Wortham with shows at 7PM and 9:30PM. Headliner Todd Barry (Sex In the City, Conan/Letterman, Howard Stern, Chappelle's Show, Larry Sanders, HBO Comedy Showcase, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Wonder Showzen...) appears with 8-10 other comics.

Saw it last night and Todd Barry rocked the house, lampooning Eaties cereal bar and a woman in the audience with the "sea creatures variety pack" set of tattoos...

Download the free Rhapsody player and listen to Todd here (NSFW!).

$28-$24

Ushers for the late show are still needed -- call Greg at 828-279-1215 to usher for a free ticket.

(Full disclosure: The festival organizers are two of my closest friends, two local people who bet all their savings on a dream. I'll be there tonight ushering & enjoying the show, so come by and say hey!)
