Transit Master Plan Kicks Off Tomorrow

Here's a quick heads-up, because I know many of you are interested in public transit issues: The The much-anticipated Transit Master Plan kicks off tomorrow with a Technical Steering Committee meeting from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM in the Municipal Building at 100 Court Plaza.

During this gathering the consultant, HDR Engineering Inc. of the Carolinas, will make a presentation of their approach, methodology and timeline. Though this meeting is not intended for public participation the public is welcome to attend.

The Steering Committee will provide technical advice in the development of the Transit Master Plan - which aims to analyze existing transit services; assess current and future needs; and apply the findings to improve the current level of service and prepare for future demand.

Each of the city's 24 bus routes and transfer facilities will be studied to determine how they are being used. From there, the planning team will develop a range of options aimed at improving the transit system, such as increasing frequencies and redefining routes according to demand. The plan also will examine funding opportunities. HDR will team with AJM Consulting for data gathering and Cherry Consulting of the Carolinas for public involvement.

Initial work will begin next week, with the onboard survey and rider count. The study will be completed in summer 2009.
