Makes Me Wonder

So a friend of a friend was robbed last night at gunpoint near the Wachovia Bank in West Asheville around 12 midnight.

Now, I don't want to scare anyone unduly, but I have been waiting all day for the Citizen-Times or WLOS to report on this incident, but as of 7:17pm, neither had.

I understand Asheville is a tourist town, and some folks want to keep the news like this under press, but people live here as well, and not knowing what is going on is dangerous.

Heads up, West Asheville. Don't be scared, just be aware!

don't look for news of this sort on local tv or newspapers. a friend of mine was murdered a couple of years ago, the assailant captured by next morning. an incident that was spectaular enough to appear on wlos once and AC-T once. after that total silence as to incident, trial, conviction, aftermath etc.

Thanks for the heads up, JFC; that's just down the road from my apartment.

i know many people like to think that there's a conspirancy behind everything they don't like or understand, but there's no attempt on the part of local media to suppress news like this.

No, there is no attempt or conspiracy to suppress it, but there is no active attempt to cover it either, is there?

BTW, it is no different anywhere else.

This is terrible, but people do get mugged all the time. It's not that newsworthy.

blogworthy though!

Folks getting mugged isn't newsworthy?

Seems to me that if folks knew that several people had been mugged, some at gunpoint, on Haywood Road, then they could be more watchful, more wary when in that area.

It's important for the public to know this kind of thing. I understand the idea of limited resources and all, but to say that folks getting mugged at gunpoint isn't newsworty is more of an Atlanta/Charlotte attitude than an Asheville one.

If the blogs start covering this stuff, then sooner or later, they will have to...

Damn, that's scary. That's my neighborhood too.

bill in ashevile - yes, there is an active attempt to cover crime and public safety in asheville. but one mugging does not necessarily mean it's newsworthy.

you want to know the mugging that the local news media covered this week? it was the purse snatching and dragging of a foreign exchange student down off Clingman.

hey wait a minute. there is a feeling running thru these comments that news is news. i think a lot of folks would agree today that instead it's entertainment (but not very entertaining). analogous to "reality" tv, or the electronics section of wal-mart. polished, shined, commodified, predictable, meaningless. it might work as a distraction but a distraction from what?

from what's happening on the street.
