UNC Asheville Hosts Talk by Horror Movie Make-Up Artist Tom Savini

Renowned master horror movie make-up artist Tom Savini will reveal his secrets for creating such gruesome movie characters as Jason Voorhees from "Friday the 13th" and Leatherface from "Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2" at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 10, in UNC Asheville's Humanities Lecture Hall. Though the event is free and open to the public, this talk is not recommended for children or the faint of heart!

Savini, nicknamed "The Godfather of Gore," is an accomplished horror movie make-up artist, actor, director and stunt coordinator. Savini rose to fame with his grisly effects in the 1978 zombie cult classic "Dawn of Dead" and 1980's wildly popular "Friday the 13th." He went on to perfect the horror movie special effects genre in such films as "Maniac," "The Burning," "Creepshow," and "Day of the Dead."

Not content with just being behind the lens, Savini has appeared on The Simpsons and in dozens of films, including "Knightriders," "Dawn of the Dead" and "From Dusk Till Dawn." In addition, Savini runs the Special Effects Make-Up Program at the Douglas Education Center in Monessen, Pa., and is the author of several books on special effects.

CUTTER

If you've been hungering for another area movie to get in on, Director Lee Bridges is seeking a cast for his film, CUTTER, to be filmed here in WNC this summer.

"Please email snakeskinjacketproductions@gmail.com (with CUTTER CASTING in the memo line) with electronic resume and headshot for consideration. This project will be paid for actors. This is a non-union project. Actors will receive screen credit as well as digital copy of finished project within six months of completion of principal photography. Project destination will be on the film festival circuits of North America and Europe (2009) for distribution.

Modern day story of four carefree college girls travel through the Blue Ridge Mountains for a seemingly peaceful and innocent weekend adventure. When they happen upon the last remaining family of Col. Oswald Burke, a radical military guerrilla leader of the Confederate Army, their lives change forever. All the Burke family knows how to do is take care of their own kind, by any means necessary. This is a tale of struggle and survival for the girls, a drifter and others they meet along their way. Their fate lay in their own hands... and in Cutter's.

The film, Anywhere, USA, has been chosen as a Sundance 2008 official selection in dramatic competition!

What, you might ask, is Anywhere, USA, and why should I care? This is the film formerly known as asheville the movie, which has been at least a three-year labor of love by director Chusy Jardine and his lovely wife, Jennifer MacDonald.

And I have a cameo in the film as a waitress (unless I've been cut, which is possible). Many, many folks you know and will recognize appear in this film and many, many more locations around town will be evident (my scenes were shot at Table Restaurant downtown).

The Sundance Film Festival takes place in Park City, Utah, from January 17-28, 2008.

I'll be following the festivities closely and hoping for occasional updates from Chusy and company.
