Assemble, Build, Connect

Fellow Asheville Lovers!

I had to miss the March 15th discussion at Rosetta's Kitchen on "Supporting Indy Media & Community Journalism,", but I am looking forward to more upcoming meetings in the Asheville ABC series:

"a series of conversations that attempt to cover the most prominent community issues, opportunities & challenges as best understood by a group of volunteers involved in various levels of community service & action. These conversations are meant to Assemble, Build & Connect proactive ideas that can effectively create positive infrastructure and opportunities for the Asheville & WNC region."

More information, links to further discussion, and volunteer opportunities can be found at the Asheville ABCs portal. (There's a facebook community too if you just can't get outta that site these days.....)

Two new tools from Ashvegas City Hall

Cross-posted from Ashvegas:

The IT people over at Asheville City Hall have been busy lately. They've been working on beefing up the offerings at mapasheville, a cool city site that puts killer map info into a format that you can use. You can see a bird's eye view of your back yard. You can measure distances if you're a runner or a biker. You can check zoning designations and property tax information.

Now, there's more.

First, with developmentmapper, you can keep up with key construction projects as they make their way through the city bureaucracy.

Want to keep an eye on that Meadow Road rezoning for the new animal shelter? It's there. Want to know more about *Asheville Mini Storage's plans* to add 35,000 square feet of storage space? It's there. How about Plasticard Locktech's nearly 10,000-square-foot expansion plans, or the latest on the Bohemian Hotel or Hotel Indigo.

It's all there, just a click away.

Coming next is crimemapper, an online tool that will combine crime statistics with the city's mapping information to allow users to map and track all sorts of crime trends in our community. The city will be looking for some beta testers in the near future. We'll keep you up to date when it launches.

Happy surfing.

Mountain Voices Alliance Fun-Raiser Tonight!

Mountain Voices Alliance has been feverishly working to promote sensible development and land-use planning. From the Woodfin Power Plant to steep-slope regulation, MVA's volunteers go to the meetings that you won't go to, and they stand up to the greedy, bullying developers who would rather be left to their own egocentric devices. They're bona fide bad-asses.

Watch the video. Come out to the event!

Asheville Unveils New Online Development Mapper

From the excellent Mountain Xpress blog:

"MapAsheville uses Geographic Information Systems technology to retreive detailed information about large-scale development projects, displaying them on multi-layered interactive maps. The electronic maps are accompanied by detailed information on meeting dates, as well as links to city staff documents. You can search by owner name, address or PIN number, and the technology allows you to measure distances, perform basic real estate research and even create mailing labels for a neighborhood gathering."
