High school culinary programs create next batch of local chefs
Asheville, East Henderson offer trendy, practical food curriculum


The Citizen-Times reports "Asheville High School student Asha Hertel goes up against the top teen culinary talents in a national competition this month.

The prize if she wins: An $80,000 scholarship to Johnson & Wales University, no small potatoes for a high school senior looking for higher education.

Hertel, 17, is a finalist in the national competition. She and eight others will craft culinary creations Feb. 18 in Charlotte before a panel of judges, who will award the full scholarship to Johnson & Wales University, considered one of the preeminent culinary colleges in the country. The college operates six campuses, including its Charlotte location, which opened in 2002.

Hertel is one of 40 students in Asheville High’s culinary arts program, taught by Joe Lilly. School officials had to turn away another 100 applicants for the program this year, said principal Judd Porter, largely because the state limits the class sizes to a maximum of 16 students.

Go East! I did the cosmetology program there my senior year. Now they've kicked it up a notch!
