BlogAsheville's Inaugural International Giblet Olympics and Gravy Guzzler

Abraham Lincoln, from his proclamation of a National Day of Thanksgiving, "It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and voice by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union."

Image Hosted by ImageShack.usOne Hundred and Forty Two years later a cabal of internet diarists in western North Carolina, known collectively as BlogAsheville, proclaimed the Friday before the last Thursday in November an International Giblet Olympics and Gravy Guzzler, "We've decided it's as fit and as proper as can be to gather bloggers into one comfortable place and create a holiday based around the creation of giblet sports, the crude imbibing of gravies, and the genuine celebration of community. We do therefore invite our fellow netizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the Friday before the last Thursday of November as a day of Giblet Olympics and Gravy Guzzler and praisins to that guy who invented the internets. With a humble appreciation of perverseness and disobedience and a robust bon vivance, BlogAsheville raises our glasses to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union."

Yes, cheers to Internet created communities. Hopefully I'll be able to make it to the Giblet Olympics and Gravy Guzzler!

Interestingly, August marked the 14th anniversary of WWW's public debut--thanks to a Swiss organization Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire. Apologies for being so nerdy, I'm teaching myself how to write HTML, XML and CSS from a myriad of books and found the history of the internet/WWW quite fascinating.

Yes, Syntax, this is a potluck. I'm a great cook, but I'm not making two Thanksgiving meals this year (even though it's difficult for me not to overfeed everyone who comes into my home--Southern female thing).

Screwy, you are one of the most dramatic personas I've ever had the luck to know. Praise God and pass the gravy.

So, let's start talking food. Syn, pumpkin cheescake would be great. I'll do appetizers and apple cider. I'll have some beer and wine, but extra will be appreciated (if you want anything harder, bring it on--Ash, I'm assuming you'll bring the Wild T?).

E-mail me for directions, y'all. Looking forward to having you here at the villa.

Uptown,
Regarding numbers, should we e-mail the post to all Asheville bloggers for whom we have e-mail addresses?

I'm bringing taters with vegetarian friendly gravy for guzzlin'

So far no luck finding shooters and cocktails with gravy as an ingredient. We may have to improvise.

Also, I've found that giblet tossing is a fun and difficult sport. Giblet juggling is not for novices. Giblet Hacky Sack has not been a crowd pleaser. The Giblet pole vault is very exciting. Giblet racing requires a jockey, of course, so bring your jerseys. Giblet gymnastics can be very dangerous so be sure to STRETCH. More soon.

I'm having a hard time deciding what to bring. I think I'll make something traditional and something not so traditional.

Sign me up for the sweet potato dish. The other will have to be a surprise. But it will be a main course or side dish.

Does anyone care if it contains meat, like turkey or chicken?

I need to go stick my nose in a few cookbooks...

No flesh for me please, but I won't handcuff myself to your SUV if you decide to have some meatfoods. The more meat the merrier the meateaters.

To make sure I've got myself right...

7pm, yes?

Hey y'all, can I come? Can I bring my husband? Can I bring a green bean casserole?

Edgy Mama said...

Yeah, Jim. Please come with spouse and green beans!

I'm going to post later this week with a list of who's coming and what they're bringing. In the mean time, do e-mail me if you want directions.

If we had an SUV, Screwy, you would be more than welcome to handcuff yourself to it. I'll be sure to save a slice of giblet pie for you, just in case you change your mind.

Yes, Screwy. 7 pm sounds perfect--that way, by the time we sit down to eat, my little ones SHOULD be asleep (bedtime story volunteers will get extra portions, big beer and my slavish adoration).

Seems like we'll have a good mix of meat and non dishes, so everyone stay calm.
